To Aphrodite

Calling out to other mythology (there’s not nearly enough of you!) or Pagan bloggers out there! Does anyone have any requests for some divine digital art?

If you would like me to create a piece of digital art (for use on your blog) of a particular god, goddess, religious symbol, etc, let me know in the comments.

I made this last year some time. I thought it had a kind of oceany look about it, and reminded me of Sadako from the Japanese horror movie Ringo (Ring), who was born, miraculously (If I remember correctly), by an ocean spirit/Kami, and also the ‘foam-born’ goddess Aphrodite.

Statue of Aphrodite

I found the picture of the goddess’ statue at Stock.XCHNG, and it seemed to fit quite well, and then added the verse from a Homeric Hymn.

    That’s gorgeous, Mahud.

You know what — for some time I’ve been meaning to start doing names of deities in my word of the day series. It would be extremely awesome to have some of your illustrations to accompany them! How does that sound?

    Thanks, Jeff :D

I’d love to create some accompanying illustrations for you.

If you already have some deity names in mind, email me, and I’ll see what I can come up with :)

The goddess Epona would be wonderful for me. She is often seen in her equine form as a white mare.

Hey, R.E, I’ve posted your Epona image. I hope you like it :)

    Lovely artwork!

I would be thrilled if someone would someday find a way to capture some of Herne’s numen for me in art. No one ever has–the Cernunnos figure of the Gundestrap Cauldron is awkward and graceless, Robin Wood’s stag-antlered hunter at dawn is pretty but without punch, the BBC Robin Hood Herne is tame and flat and dull… and so on and so forth. Some pieces are good art, some are good mythology, but none I’ve ever found are remotely… Him.

Hm. Mission impossible. Perhaps not the place to start–though I do wish someone with trance or dream experience of Him would take the task on. (Maybe that they haven’t yet suggests he doesn’t want a portrait? Hmmm…)

Looking forward to seeing more of your images, though, as you explore the world of mythology in more personal depth.

    Thanks, Cat!

Cernunnos, is my favourite Celtic deity, and I’d love to try a capture what the god means to me. To me, he seems like such a passive god, sitting (on a throne) or squatting, but his iconography suggests that his power is really dynamic and regenerative, which might be difficult to combine.

I’ll have to give a go sometime :)

I never see Herne except on a horse… Charles de Lint wrote a book which featured Him as a rider at the head of a Wild Hunt that rode motorcycles, if I remember right.

I might not… Charles de Lint would be one of my favorite writers of all time–if only he wrote well. By which I mean, he consistently writes on themes and characters and even plotlines I find fascinating–but in a fashion I find so dull I’m incapable of reading the stories to the end! As if he is instinctively drawn to the most powerful aspects of Pagan mythology, but simply lacks the skills to present them well.

I might feel more scorn and less regret if it weren’t for the fact that, where Herne is concerned, finding artists (or writers) who catch even an echo of Him is so rare. Or if I weren’t caught myself in the same bind when it comes to music, never really able to sing properly the songs I hear in my head that come from that root…

    Ah, well.

If you’re still offering these gifts, I would love an image of the Morrigan. She’s been my matron diety for over 15 years now, and I’ve never come across a satisfactory image of her.

    Hi, Cathy :D

I’d love to make an image of Morrigan for you. I’ll have to do a little research too, as I’m not hugely familiar with her. All I know is that in mythology she appears in battle.
