Creating the Cosmos for the very first time

August 31, 2007 at 9:32 pm by mahud

Spontaneous fellow that I am, I simultaneously created and performed my first ritual today.

I lifted a blanket in the air, representing heaven, and laid it upon the floor, representing earth. I folded it twice, partaking in the act of creating the cosmos, and sitting in the centre, I became a part of creation.

I closed my eyes and remained silent for a few moments before filling a cup with water, and placed it to the north of the sacred space, representing the element of (you guessed it) H20. I sprinkled a few drops upon the blanket and upon myself. I lit a candle and placed it south, representing the element fire, placed a fan on the east side, representing air, and the element earth to the west.

I sat in silence again for a few moments before turning to each direction and thanking the creator and the gods for blessing us for each element, and again sat quietly, before ‘unmaking the cosmos’ thus ending the ritual.

It felt really good actually doing something, instead of just thinking about it all the time, or just meditating. I suck at mediating. I needed something that involved physical action, and I was able to achieve a moment of peace through the flow of my actions. It felt very natural :)

I’m not going to be on the computer much this weekend. I’ll be spending the next three days hanging out with Shanny.

Have a grooovy weekend ;)

    Well done!
I especially like the partaking in the act of Creation bit -that’s something I’ll think about incorporating into my actual ritual, rather than, as you say, just thinking about it.
It seems to be something we humans need- to get up and do something at some point. Maybe it imprints our beliefs upon our cells.

    Love,
    Terri in Joburg

Congratulations! I’m so very glad you were inspired to create that spiritual moment. I love the idea of making a blanket sacred. And Terri made a fine point, that ritual imprints our beliefs on our soul. That’s a wonderfully evocative concept and I may steal it! lol

    Ah… this is great.

I don’t remember who it was who said that thinking about meditating is like looking at a picture of food… I know that, for me, experience is the essence of a spiritual life.

And (predictably enough, for a Quaker Pagan) I love the simple and spontaneous in ritual. Thanks for sharing this.

I seriously expected you to finish this story with “and then I put it in the closet with the other newly washed and folded laundry.”

    :-D

    Beautiful ritual Mahud.

Kay, I was waiting for the same result. :D It does make me think that folding clothes will be a bit more exciting.

Congratulations, Mahud. Spontaneous, organic and meaningful.

Hope you had a fantastic weekend.

    Thanks every one :D

lol. I wonder if I should use a special kind of fabric softener, like ‘essence of summer meadow’, or something. It might make the ritual more effective :D

It would be cool if I could find a blanket that was a representation of the sky and earth and sea. I’m keeping my eye out for one.

I had a great weekend, watching the entire first season of Heroes. I thought it was pretty cool. Not as good as Lost or Alias though.

Lovely ritual, thanks for sharing. That’s pretty much all you need; amazing how “please” and “thank you” turn out to comprise much of any meaningful spiritual practice. That, and being in the center of creation.
    Best wishes,
    Anne
