Journaling Forward: Inspired by Simple Magics

October 12, 2007 at 8:37 pm by mahud

Where do I want to be in five years, and what am I willing to do to get there? A few months ago I decided to give myself five years to transform my life and get to the place where I want to be. I didn’t really have any framework or guidelines to help me achieve my five year goal, until I read a post by Aeris at Simple Magics, entitled Journaling Forward.

Six personal journeys leading to my goal

  1. Write a book
  2. Meditation
  3. Blogging
  4. Devotion
  5. Web Design
  6. England
Write a book
It has been my desire to write a book on what I am currently referring to as The Cosmic Mysteries, concerning a Divine Being or Cosmic Hero whose death becomes totally identified with some form of paradisaical primordial transgression, that severs the link between the ultimate divine source and the material cosmos, spiraling the universe in chaos and annihilation. Due to the indestructible divine nature of the Cosmic Hero, the universe is rejoined with the divine, the transgression that wrought cosmic death becomes the very vehicle for cosmic rebirth, and according to the Cosmic Hero’s ever-living ever-dying lunar-cosmic nature, the recreated and reordered universe is brought into existence.
It has been ten years of research in the making, and especially over the past three years I have managed to piece the mythologies together into a coherent whole. I finally began to work on my first chapter a couple of months ago, and have been researching hard, pushing myself to produce something truly book worthy (complete with extensive references and bibliography).

Meditation
I began meditating this summer, but I soon feel out of practice. This was mostly due to be unable to find a comfortable sitting position, neck and back ache, and the fact that my body is just waaay to tense all the time. I’m interested in visualization, involving interior journeys where I meet with the gods or spirit guides, and draw information up from my subconscious.
I also want to become more aware of my actions and those around me, and develop internal calm and compassion. My biggest problem is suffering from social anxiety. I believe that through meditation I will be able to overcome my paralyzing and totally irrational fear of social interaction. It’s pretty deep rooted going back to my childhood, and really started to manifest 17 years ago. Ever since then, my life has been a complete mess. Conquering my SA, would certainly be my biggest achievement, and unless I can pull it off, I’m basically screwed.
Blogging
It’s hard work coming up with posts every week, but I really love my blog. I’m sure that over time my blogging style will improve and I’ll be able to increase my audience, writing more comment worthy material. My Blog writing is also intimately connected with my book writing, and I want to use my blog as a way to promote my book.
Devotion
I want to devote more time connecting with the divine, through study, prayer, devotion, and thankfulness.
Web Design
I love designing websites, but over the past few months, I’ve really let things slide. I want to commit myself to spending some time every week building upon my current design skills, create templates and generate income.
England
I miss my family and my country more that I imagined I would. I want be back in England (hopefully well within five years!), and live either in Cornwall or Wiltshire.

The Exercise

This exercise involves visualizing yourself five years from now. As I’m not very skilled with this kind of stuff (see Meditation), it’s going to have form to part of my ongoing meditations, which (If I keep working at it) will improve over time. Anyway here’s the exercise as outlined by Aeris.

Choose a time frame, 5 years, one year, 6 months, one month. Fast forward time, and imagine yourself there already. Look around and be open about what you see, you alone do not dictate the future and surprises may appear in your visualization that you would not have placed there.

What are you doing? Where are you? What do your surroundings look, feel and smell like? What actions were necessary for you to take to get here? Are you pleased with the results of your effort? What have you learned and what obstacles have you overcome? What pleasures have you met along the way? Go into as much detail as you can see, it will help to make the future more concrete and your goal more attainable.

The Exercise: My visualization

It’s Summer. Shanny and I live in cottage with a beautiful garden full of trees, plants and flowers, and a greenhouse where we grow our own veggies. My family, including my mum, dad, stepmum, my sisters and their kids are spending the weekend with us and we spend the day until evening sitting outside around a table, eating, drinking wine, laughing and chatting about stuff into the evening in a wonderfully relaxed atmosphere.

You took a simple exercise and developed it far beyond what I imagined. My mother would be so proud of you lol

I read your blog almost daily but commenting is beyond my knowledge of mythology most times. I do learn a lot though and wander off to research what I don’t recognize, a full length book would give me months of researching. :)

Meditation is tough, no doubt it’s difficult for me to sit still so my little brother suggested tai chi as a form of moving meditation. No stiff back, no cramped thighs and yet all the benefits!

Best wishes for your return to England, though I fully expect you to keep blogging where ever you reside.

There’s definitely a book here, Mahud - one I would buy and enjoy, for certain!

On the meditation front, I have found that the time doesn’t matter. I have disciplined myself to sit every evening at the same time. It can be as much as a couple of hours (not often!) or as little as 30 seconds. Time seems to run differently in the sitting-state anyway. A half minute can accomplish as much as, or more than, a full couple of hours. It’s a mystery. :) The thing is to do it every single day-for me, at least. It’s become as natural and as necessary a habit as brushing my teeth.

I believe that your SA will go away- probably through working at it, but if you’re unlucky it may disappear as suddenly and as totally as my agoraphobia did- leaving you wondering what the hel happened.OK, I had to go through death-and-rebirth first. Maybe that’s the key, I still don’t know.

Keep up your excellent blog ,please- although I don’t comment often, I read it avidly.
    Love,
    Terri in Joburg

You’ll have to thank your mum for me, Aeris :D

I think it’s a great idea! And I plan to expand the idea further, in getting it to work for me. I forgot to mention that I plan setting things in motion on Nov 1st.

I don’t mind if readers don’t comment. I visit tons of blogs where I’m unable to really add anything, due to my lack of knowledge. I need to come up with articles that more people can relate to.

I’m happy you find the mythology enjoyable, and that you research too. Feel free to share anything you don’t understand, or feel is inaccurate with me. I would be good for me to have some positive criticism :D

Thanks, Terri. There’s definitely a book, I know it. Probably enough material for a book already, but I really want to bury myself in research, and come up with something awesome!

I’ve been researching a chapter for the past month, and I already have uncovered some really great info. Hope fully I’ll soon have enough material to being writing my first chapter, I’m calling The Double Death. I’ll most likely post my first draft on the blog.

Thanks for the meditation tips :D

I’ve experienced many deaths, but no rebirth so far, regarding SA. I have hopes that one day it will just disappear, but at the moment there are so many problems associated with SA, that act as a constant reminder that I’m never going to recover. I need to focus of the positive and not the negative, but it’s so damn difficult. Thanks for your encouragement, Terri.

    P.S: If I get published I’ll sent you a copy ;)

I want to echo those who look forward to the book, mahud.

Another option for a meditation position is just to lay down. Not in bed, but on a carpetted or padded floor. Start with progessive relaxation. You may find more progress if you make haste slowly. There’s no hurry.

I used to be scared to death of groups. I’m still not enamored by them, but I can tolerate them now. What primarily got me inured was being forced to participate. In a job I used to have I was told I had to do the training. It wasn’t a pretty sight at first, at least not from my point of view. I’m still not the life of the party. But I learned to tolerate it.

Well, I managed to do quite a bit of research for my chapter over that past couple of days, found lots of good sources. They way it’s going, I’ll be stuck in research mode for quite some time. I don’t mind, Its fun actually, just makes me wonder if I’ll finish the book before I’m 80 or something lol

Thanks Rick. And for the meditation tips. you are right, there’s no hurry. When I look back over the past three years I’ve managed to accomplish so much. It just take time and patience.

I’m Socially Anxious both offline and on. I’m kind of an extrovert trapped in an introverts body. Before my SA kicked it, I was always kind of shy meeting new people, but I could usually get over it. Still, I have hope. I guess mostly it’s a confidence thing.
